The latest iteration of the Unreal Engine from Epic Games has been unveiled and it looks pretty darn impressive!
Boasting the ability to “create as much geometric detail as the eye can see” and showcasing its abilities in a new trailer that you can view on the Unreal Engine website here, the new version of the engine seems to be giving developers the ability to do far more than ever before.

Polygon count budgets, memory budgets and draw count budgets seem to also be a thing of the past with new Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry, meaning that incredible detail can be captured and no loss of quality suffered, despite the size of maps.
Lumen, the new illumination solution also looks pretty amazing, allowing light bounces and specular reflections to be edited and enhanced down to the smallest millimetre and will also allow some pretty amazing light effects across the board in future.

Apparently available in preview from 2021 and then in releases later that year, it looks like we won’t have to wait long to see some truly amazing games.
It’s an amazing achievement and I can’t wait to see it appear in the next generation of games.
