Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay reveal

So we were treated to our first proper view of some Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay, with a developer going hands on to show us a bit more of the upcoming title from Larian Studios, including the impressive character creator and some pretty brilliant and unsettling cutscenes.

With Larian founder Sven Vincke starting the game from scratch in order to showcase the different origin stories available, we were able to get our first glimpse at the start of the game, which looks to begin with the player caught by some pretty intimidating Mindflayers!

The cutscenes really have to be seen to be believed, with dragons, eldritch horrors and more brought to life in stunning CGI glory. Icy mountains and stretching sinew are vivid and on par with the likes of Blizzard, who have often been cited as one of the best developers when it comes to cut-scenes.

In regard to the gameplay itself, the sequel looks to be everything that fans had hoped for when it comes to the story and world, an eerie dive back into the lore of the Dungeons and Dragons series filled with multiple choice decisions, customisation and player freedom.

Larian have more than proven themselves masters of storytelling in the past, with the studio having created hits like Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2, but many were anxious about the sequel, having waited 20 years for a proper sequel to the second game.

Despite this, fans seemed conflicted over the choice to keep the game turn-based, with many hoping for a combat system similar to that seen in Pillars of Eternity, however, the gameplay instead has continued to remain more loyal to its roots, taking a similar turn-based approach to that of the Divinity series, allowing for more tactical decision making.

Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on the game!
