It looks like Tencent is eager to show the world why we should always be hesitant about their involvement in the game-creation process, with Chinese games locked to the version of the Switch they’re creating for China.
It doesn’t sound like much of a problem, but at the same time, it means that Tencent is actually creating region locks in order to make the games that can’t be played without the Switch distributed via the company.
Mentioned here by Analyst Daniel Ahmad, the issue also means that if a console has been imported by someone in China, it will be unable to play the titles published in the country by Tencent.
It also means that games exclusively launched in China will be unable to be imported, such as the New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, which is published by Tencent.
Although not a huge issue, it’s concerning to see an external company creating their own locks on titles and consoles, showing that the worries many have about Tencent are justified.
